My Birth MAP · Institutional Partnership
My Birth MAP is a maternal self-advocacy curriculum designed for the women most often left out of their own healthcare. We partner with doula organizations, community health networks, and rural health systems to change that.
The Problem
Black women — especially in rural communities — are navigating maternity care systems that were not designed with them in mind. The outcomes reflect that.
Rural Black mothers often travel hours for prenatal care, face limited provider options, and deliver in facilities with no maternal fetal medicine support.
Research consistently shows Black women's pain and concerns are minimized by providers. Self-advocacy skills are not optional — they are life-saving.
Most expectant mothers — especially first-time mothers — don't know what they're entitled to ask for, what a birth plan can include, or how to navigate disagreements with providers.
Care is often structured around institutional efficiency rather than patient outcomes. Women leave their own births feeling like something happened to them, not with them.
The Program
My Birth MAP is a maternal self-advocacy curriculum that gives pregnant women the language, tools, and confidence to be active participants in their own care. It was built from the ground up for women who are often left out — rural, under-resourced, and underestimated.
MAP stands for what it does: it gives women a map. Not a script. Not a checklist. A living, strategic framework they can carry into every provider interaction, every decision, every room.
Most maternal health interventions train providers. My Birth MAP trains mothers. It shifts the locus of power back to the woman in the room — which is where it belongs.
The curriculum was created by Britney Washington, a birth worker, community health worker, and maternal advocate who has worked bedside, in communities, and in policy spaces. She built MAP because no resource like it existed for the women she was serving.
The free version has been downloaded in 13 countries without a single paid ad. The need is real. The reach is ready. We're looking for partners to take it further.
